Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. The parents of her didn't want her to pursue acting until she became an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry was a shy teenager and didn't act. Her first acting experience was in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she got small roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry her back home California and theater roles were in demand. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was performed at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
